Write a document online (Practice Docs)
Create a document online, name it, write and make text bold. It saves itself.
Step by step
- Click the Start button! Look at the bottom of this practice computer: the dark strip there is its taskbar. In the middle of it, click the Start button (four blue squares). The main menu opens just above it. If you see two taskbars, use the one inside this page.
- Click "Browser". In the menu that opened, click the "Browser" tile (a square with a small picture and its name under it): the app opens in its own window.
- Go to docs.practice.example. Click in the address bar, type "docs.practice.example" then Enter: you land on Practice Docs.
- Create a "Blank document". Click the big white page "+ Blank document".
- Give the document a name. A new document is always called "Untitled document". Give it a name you will recognize later: at the top left, click the words "Untitled document" once (they turn blue: they are selected), type "My letter", then press Enter.
- Write a few lines. Click in the big white page, under the toolbar: a blinking line appears, that is where your text goes. Write a sentence or two, for example "Thank you for the lovely dinner on Sunday."
- Make a word bold. Bold makes a word stand out. Double-click one word of your text (for example "dinner"): it is highlighted in blue, which means selected. Then click the "B" button on the toolbar, above the page. The word becomes thicker.
- Close this window. You are done with this window, so close it: click the ✕ button at the top right corner of the "Browser" window (on its title bar, the strip at the top). The window disappears.
These steps are written for SafePC, a pretend Windows-style computer in your web browser. On your own computer, the buttons and menus may look a little different, but the idea is the same.
Practice it where nothing can break
SafePC works like a real computer, but nothing you do goes anywhere. Try every button, make mistakes and start again.
