Accessibility Statement
Last updated: October 5, 2026.
TryTechSafe exists to help people feel confident with technology, so it has to work for everyone, including people with disabilities and people who use assistive technology. This statement covers trytechsafe.com, SafePC (safepc.trytechsafe.com) and SafePhone (safephone.trytechsafe.com).
Our goal
We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, level AA. These guidelines explain how to make web content easier to use for people who are blind or have low vision, are deaf or hard of hearing, have limited movement, or have speech, cognitive or learning disabilities. We consider the service partially conformant: most of it meets level AA, and the exceptions we know about are listed below.
What we do
- Easy to read: large text by default (19 px on the website), the Atkinson Hyperlegible typeface, designed for readers with low vision, and colors chosen for strong contrast (at least 4.5:1 for text).
- Keyboard: every page of the website can be used with the keyboard alone, with a clearly visible focus outline and a "Skip to content" link.
- Screen readers: headings, labels, landmarks and text alternatives are in place; form errors and confirmations are announced; links that open a new tab say so.
- Zoom and small screens: pages reflow down to 320 px wide and can be zoomed to 200% without losing content.
- Less motion: if your device asks for reduced motion, animations and smooth scrolling are turned off.
- Plain language: short sentences and no jargon in lessons and on the website.
- In the practice devices: SafePhone has a big-text setting, a dark theme, a screen-reader mode that reads what you touch, high-contrast text, color correction and an option to remove animations, plus 3-button navigation for people who find swipe gestures hard. Lesson instructions are shown in large text with a clear highlight on what to tap. SafePC can be used with the mouse or the keyboard and has its own display and text-size settings.
Known limitations
SafePC and SafePhone are practice copies of a computer and a smartphone. To teach real gestures, some lessons ask you to do exactly what you would do on a real device, which can be hard with some disabilities:
- Some lessons ask you to swipe, drag, or press and hold (for example, moving a window or an app icon). In SafePhone, the 3-button navigation and the "Skip step" button are always available; in SafePC, most actions also work with the keyboard, but a few drag-only lessons do not yet have a keyboard alternative.
- Inside the practice devices, screen-reader support is not complete: the pretend apps are drawn to look like a real phone and computer, and some of their controls may not be announced as clearly as on the website.
- The practice web browser in SafePC can show content from Wikipedia and OpenStreetMap, which we do not control.
- Payments are made on Stripe's secure checkout page, which follows Stripe's own accessibility standards.
We are working on these points. If one of them stops you from learning, please tell us: we will help you directly and use your feedback to decide what to fix first.
How we check
We review the service ourselves, using automated testing (axe-core) and manual checks with the keyboard, zoom, small screens and screen-reader names, on current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. We have not yet had an independent audit.
