Tabs and favorites

Open a new tab, switch between tabs, and keep a page in your favorites.

8 steps · about 3 minutes · practice it with SafePC Pro

Step by step

  1. Click the Start button! Look at the bottom of this practice computer: the dark strip there is its taskbar. In the middle of it, click the Start button (four blue squares). The main menu opens just above it. If you see two taskbars, use the one inside this page.
  2. Click "Browser". In the menu that opened, click the "Browser" tile (a square with a small picture and its name under it): the app opens in its own window.
  3. Open a new tab. At the very top of the Browser window, the strip with the tab "New tab" is the tab strip. Just to the right of that tab, click the small "+": a second tab opens next to the first and becomes the active one.
  4. Go to Wikipedia. In this new tab, click in the address bar (the long white bar under the tabs), type "wikipedia.org" then press Enter. The tab's name changes to Wikipedia: each tab has its own page.
  5. Add the page to your favorites. At the right end of the address bar, click the ☆ star: a small box titled "Favorite added" opens below it. In that box, click the blue "Done" button. The page now appears as a button on the favorites bar, the row just under the address bar.
  6. Go back to the first tab. You now have two tabs at the top of the window. Click the first one, the leftmost (it says "New tab"): its page, the Browser home page, is shown again.
  7. Close the other tab. The Wikipedia tab is the second one, on the right. Click the small ✕ at its right end: that tab closes and only the first one remains.
  8. Close this window. You are done with this window, so close it: click the ✕ button at the top right corner of the "Browser" window (on its title bar, the strip at the top). The window disappears.

These steps are written for SafePC, a pretend Windows-style computer in your web browser. On your own computer, the buttons and menus may look a little different, but the idea is the same.

Practice it where nothing can break

SafePC works like a real computer, but nothing you do goes anywhere. Try every button, make mistakes and start again.
