SafePC · Internet

Download, then open a file

Save a file from the Internet and find it in Downloads.

8 steps · about 3 minutes · practice it with SafePC Pro

Step by step

  1. Click the Start button! Look at the bottom of this practice computer: the dark strip there is its taskbar. In the middle of it, click the Start button (four blue squares). The main menu opens just above it. If you see two taskbars, use the one inside this page.
  2. Click "Browser". In the menu that opened, click the "Browser" tile (a square with a small picture and its name under it): the app opens in its own window.
  3. Click "Download the sample file". The Browser opens on its home page. Lower on that page, under the round icons, find the white box titled "Practice downloading a file" (scroll down with the mouse wheel if you do not see it) and click the blue "Download the sample file" button inside it.
  4. Click "Show in folder". A small "Downloads" panel has appeared at the top right of the Browser, with the file "example-file.txt" in it. Under the file name, click "Show in folder": File Explorer opens on your Downloads folder. (If you clicked somewhere else and the panel closed, click the Downloads button, an arrow pointing down onto a line, on the toolbar at the top right of the Browser.)
  5. Double-click the file. The File Explorer window shows the content of the Downloads folder. In the big list on the right, double-click (two quick clicks) the file "example-file.txt" (a small text-page icon): it opens in Notepad.
  6. Close this window. You are done with this window, so close it: click the ✕ button at the top right corner of the "Notepad" window (on its title bar, the strip at the top). The window disappears.
  7. Close this window. You are done with this window, so close it: click the ✕ button at the top right corner of the "File Explorer" window (on its title bar, the strip at the top). The window disappears.
  8. Close this window. You are done with this window, so close it: click the ✕ button at the top right corner of the "Browser" window (on its title bar, the strip at the top). The window disappears.

These steps are written for SafePC, a pretend Windows-style computer in your web browser. On your own computer, the buttons and menus may look a little different, but the idea is the same.

Practice it where nothing can break

SafePC works like a real computer, but nothing you do goes anywhere. Try every button, make mistakes and start again.
