SafePC · Files and folders
Copy a file to another folder
Copy a file from Downloads to Documents.
Step by step
- Click the Start button! Look at the bottom of this practice computer: the dark strip there is its taskbar. In the middle of it, click the Start button (four blue squares). The main menu opens just above it. If you see two taskbars, use the one inside this page.
- Click "File Explorer". In the menu that opened, click the "File Explorer" tile (a square with a small picture and its name under it): the app opens in its own window.
- Open "Downloads". In the column on the left of the File Explorer window (the list of your places), click "Downloads". The big area on the right then shows what is inside that folder.
- Click a file. In the big list on the right (the Downloads folder), click once (a single click) on a file, for example "example-file.txt": its row is highlighted to show it is chosen.
- Click "Copy". In the row of buttons at the top of the window, click "Copy" (two sheets on top of each other, just right of the scissors). Nothing seems to change: the file is now waiting in the computer's memory.
- Open "Documents". In the column on the left of the File Explorer window (the list of your places), click "Documents". The big area on the right then shows what is inside that folder.
- Click "Paste". Now you are in the Documents folder. In the same row of buttons, click "Paste" (the clipboard, just right of the two sheets): the copy lands in Documents and shows up in the list.
- Close this window. You are done with this window, so close it: click the ✕ button at the top right corner of the "File Explorer" window (on its title bar, the strip at the top). The window disappears.
These steps are written for SafePC, a pretend Windows-style computer in your web browser. On your own computer, the buttons and menus may look a little different, but the idea is the same.
Practice it where nothing can break
SafePC works like a real computer, but nothing you do goes anywhere. Try every button, make mistakes and start again.
