SafePC · Screen reader
Jump from heading to heading on a web page
On a web page, H jumps to the next title: the quickest way to find your way.
Step by step
- Turn on the screen reader. Press Ctrl + Alt + Enter: hold down Ctrl and Alt, then press Enter. You hear "Screen reader on". (On a real PC the shortcut is Ctrl + the Windows logo key + Enter.)
- Open Start with the keyboard. Press Ctrl + Esc: the Start menu opens and the reader reads the search box, where you can type straight away. (A real PC also has a Windows logo key for this.)
- Type "browser". Type the word browser: the reader says each letter, and Browser becomes the first result.
- Press Enter. Press Enter: the Browser opens, and the reader reads its window.
- Go to the encyclopedia. The address bar has the keyboard (the reader said "edit"). Type en.wikipedia.org and press Enter.
- Leave the boxes where you type: Tab. Press Tab, and again until the reader says "button" or "link" instead of "edit": in a box where you type (the address bar, the page's search box), H would just type the letter H.
- Press H to jump to a heading. Press H: the reader jumps to the first title of the page and says "heading". Press H again for the next one.
- Back to the previous heading. Hold Shift and press H: the reader goes back to the title before.
- Close this window. You are done with this window, so close it: click the ✕ button at the top right corner of the "Browser" window (on its title bar, the strip at the top). The window disappears.
- Turn the screen reader off. Press Ctrl + Alt + Enter again. You hear "Screen reader off".
These steps are written for SafePC, a pretend Windows-style computer in your web browser. On your own computer, the buttons and menus may look a little different, but the idea is the same.
Practice it where nothing can break
SafePC works like a real computer, but nothing you do goes anywhere. Try every button, make mistakes and start again.
